Experience shows up in the little things.

I have always loved figuring out solutions and building things that were not only beautiful but functional as well.  After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, I worked for ten years with both custom and national builders where I gained a lot of experience in managing commercial and residential projects. But I always wanted to be on my own, focusing on relationships and building a business I could be proud of.

In 2004, I started Surles Builders building custom homes and remodeling. The joy I get out of what I do are things like the finishing edge we put on the granite to make it look a bit more Tuscan, the little door we added for extra storage behind the built-in television, and the curved toe-molding around the island that hugs the cabinet just so. It's all the little things that add up to make a project look complete and worthy of close inspection. I not only care what the outside of something looks like, but I care about the underside, the joints, the back sides and the parts that no one really ever sees. My experience shows up in the little things.

Being a father, I understand how important it is to be comfortable with whomever you bring in your home. That's why I only work with sub-contractors that I've developed years of trust with and whose work is the quality I require. Getting to know the homeowners and their families is part of what I love about this job. Understanding people's personalities and coming along side them in developing their dreams is a personal process. And if I can create solutions that make their lives a little bit easier and give them something to be proud of, then I have done my job.
